Andriy Shevchenko, a dream for Milan fans and a nightmare for Inter supporters. The Ukrainian is the all-time top scorer in the Derby della Madonnina with 14 goals against the city rivals. The current president of the Ukrainian FA, always working for his country in difficult times, spoke to Repubblica ahead of tomorrow’s derby.
Asked if the derby is already a key match, Sheva replied:
“I do not think so. It will not influence the fate of the league, it is too early to say it is decisive. Still, winning is always good.”
The former number 7 then added:
“Both teams are in good form. Getting a result is more important for Milan, they are still a bit more fragile than Inter. They need to keep growing, a defeat might slow this process.”
The season started with questions, but for Shevchenko Inter have already moved past that stage:
"Today they are a different team. When a season ends you turn the page and start again. Inter’s squad stayed almost unchanged, they even strengthened. Chivu looks like a coach with a clear vision, he has the right ideas. They are among the favourites for the title."
Milan’s path is different:
“They had to regain confidence and stability. They had to rebuild after last season’s issues. You also need to consider the arrival of many new players. Allegri is handling this phase well, and it was not a given.”
Allegri’s return to Milan brought strong enthusiasm among fans. Shevchenko stressed the value of the coach:
"Max is experienced and has clear traits. He is serious, he manages players well, he has a tested style of play. When you choose him you know what you are getting, and he is meeting expectations."
He also spoke about Modric. The forty-year-old, released by Real Madrid in the summer, has impressed everyone:
"He is surprising me, he is making a strong difference. But as a team Milan still have steps to take before reaching Inter’s level."
He also spoke about Ukraine, describing the emotion after the win against Iceland, a playoff decider for the World Cup qualifiers:
"Strong. Especially given our circumstances, we live with war and we must play every match away from home. Facing Iceland was not simple, they have a clear playing style and play good football, not only long balls, throw-ins and corners. I am proud of my national team. The overall level has risen, qualifying for the World Cup in Europe has become very difficult."
