The victory in the derby against Inter has brought new enthusiasm to Milanello. First place in the standings is now only 7 points away; the gap remains challenging, but a comeback is not impossible, especially in a league that often surprises us with paradoxical upheavals.

Why is Youssouf Fofana crucial for AC Milan's form?

In this crucial phase of the season, Massimiliano Allegri hopes to have all the pieces that can add extra value at their peak condition. Among these is Youssouf Fofana. The current edition of Corriere dello Sport talks about him this morning, analyzing the performance of the French midfielder this season while also considering the last two seasons.

Youssouf Fofana leads Milan's assist charts:

The past two seasons have been very positive for the midfielder: Fofana is Milan’s top assister over the last two seasons, with 13 decisive passes in 78 matches, tied with Leao, who reached the same number in 73 appearances, two fewer than Pulisic, third with 12 assists; the other two in the top five are further behind and, in any case, no longer wear the Rossoneri shirt: Theo Hernandez is fourth with 6 assists in 49 appearances, and Tammy Abraham is fifth with 6 assists in 44 games.

The assist to Estupiñan in the derby, delivered with a perfectly measured left-footed pass, is just the most recent, following the one to Nkunku that was decisive for Milan’s draw in Florence in January. Last year, there was the through ball to Reijnders in Verona and the one to Leao in Cagliari. Allegri would like Fofana to add goals to his assists. So far this season, he has only scored the goal against Udinese in September, but his contribution cannot be measured solely by numbers, whether goals or assists.

When given the right conditions, Fofana can truly be an extra engine in Milan’s midfield, and when he is in top form, it shows clearly. Allegri hopes to have him at his peak, because achieving a remarkable comeback will require counting on all players at their best. And with a Fofana like this, things could even go better.
