The victory of Milan in the derby, in a San Siro packed with rossoneri fans, has restored to the Devil that energy which in recent weeks seemed lost. Perhaps, probably, winning the second derby out of two in the league will not change the race for the title, still largely in Inter’s hands. But Milan, and some key players in the squad, are holding on tight to this night, destined to influence decisions that will concern the near future.
The real question is called Luka Modric. If it depended only on what he continues to show on the field, especially at this pace, he could easily play for another four or five years. In the Croatian’s thoughts, the desire to continue is there; it remains to be seen where: returning to Croatia, trying one last experience elsewhere, or staying at Milan.
A Milan that, in the meantime, is enjoying him to the fullest. Because champions of this caliber haven’t been seen around here for a long time. And everyone knows it. Allegri, the club, the staff, the fans, not just those of Milan. And then comes the team, the locker room. The group recognizes the greatness and the weight of such a player, as relayed via Milan Press.
A different role
The most significant image came right after the final whistle of the derby. Modric stayed on the field for interviews, then reached the locker room where his teammates were waiting. There, amid chants and applause, the team began to sing his name. A spontaneous, simple, meaningful gesture.
From now until the end of the season, the club will have to try to complete the work that the fans have already begun weeks ago in the stands: convincing Modric to stay a little longer. Perhaps with a role destined to evolve over time. A leader on the field, certainly, but also a central figure in building the Milan of the future, to help the Devil grow by attracting other champions.
