After the "no" from Iraola first and then Xavi, the name of Oliver Glasner is currently very hot within the AC Milan camp for the future of the Milan managerial position. The now former Crystal Palace coach, with whom he won the Conference League just a few days ago, is closely linked to Ralf Rangnick, who could become the new head of Milan’s technical department. In the coming days, a meeting is scheduled between Milan and the Austrian, as relayed via Milan News.
But who is Oliver Glasner? La Gazzetta headlines it this morning:
"He risked dying when he was a player. Then the turning point as a coach."
The newspaper is referring to what happened on 4 August 2011, when he was a player for Ried, a small club where he spent almost his entire playing career, apart from a very brief spell at LASK Linz. The Austrian, then 36 years old, was in Copenhagen for a Europa League match and on the morning of the game he experienced a strong headache.
The club doctor, not understanding what was happening, decided to take him to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage, likely caused by a collision during a match a few days earlier.
From that moment, his playing career obviously ended, and he began his coaching career as assistant to Roger Schmidt at Salzburg. It was there that he first worked alongside Ralf Rangnick, who that same year became sporting director of the Austrian club and of Leipzig.
