Luka Modrić is getting closer and closer to extending his stay at AC Milan. After days of growing optimism, helped by the Rossoneri board's persistent efforts, the Croatian midfielder has reportedly decided to remain at the club for another season, aiming to accomplish what he fell short of last year: leading Milan back into the Champions League. The signing of a new one-year contract could arrive as early as this week.
According to reports from Croatia, Modrić made his decision after lengthy discussions with his family. His new agreement with Milan is expected to include a net salary of around €3.5 million per season, plus bonuses, essentially matching the terms of his previous deal.
Financial considerations, however, were reportedly not the decisive factor. Instead, the Croatian star was convinced by Milan's sporting project and the opportunity to continue competing at the highest level. After his contract expired on 30 June, Modrić chose to focus entirely on the World Cup with Croatia, postponing any talks about his future until after his holiday. Now, only the final formalities remain.
Ruben Amorim is said to have played a crucial part in convincing Modrić to stay. The new head coach reportedly contacted the veteran midfielder several times to explain his project, tactical ideas and the role he envisions for him. Unlike last season, Modrić is not expected to play with the same level of regularity, but instead will be carefully managed across Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Europa League.
Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimović also reportedly pushed personally to secure the midfielder's stay. At Milanello, the prospect of Modrić remaining has been welcomed with great enthusiasm, as both his teammates and the club's hierarchy view him as a technical leader and an important figure in the dressing room to rely on during this new era under Ruben Amorim.
