One of the big question marks surrounding Milan’s season, once the summer transfer window had closed, was the quality of the defensive department and whether there was enough depth in the squad.
In particular, the Rossoneri moved quickly to sign Mario Gila at the start of the summer window, but then decided (or were unable) to bring in another player who would certainly have helped further improve the quality of Milan’s defence. The defence now looks a little short on numbers and clearly in need of improvement, especially as it has shown its limitations without Gila.
This morning, Gazzetta dello Sport offered an overall assessment of Milan’s defence. It starts with Mario Gila, who has been the summer signing to make the biggest impact on the pitch after the first three games, although he has not completely solved the Rossoneri’s defensive problems, which could be further addressed in the coming months. The newspaper writes:
"Two goals conceded without Mario Gila, Amorim has few options: Gabbia and Tomori at the back, Diawara still to be assessed. January push for Inacio."
Sporting CP's 25-year-old Portuguese defender Gonçalo Inacio had already been targeted in the summer, but the deal could not be completed in time.
