At the end of the match between Croatia and Spain, won 2-1 by the World Champions after coming from behind thanks to a late goal from Merino, who scored twice, Croatian captain and AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric spoke to Spanish broadcaster 'Cadena COPE' in the mixed zone. Among the topics he addressed was the possibility of returning to Real Madrid after his playing career comes to an end, a dream the Milan star has never hidden.
Modric on a possible return to Madrid after the end of his career:
"Obviously, Madrid is my home. It is the club of my life. I was there for 13 years. We’ll see what happens in the future. I said it the last time I was interviewed: of course I would like to, but to be useful, to work for Madrid, not simply to be at Madrid, and to help out in any way I can. But I also have to prepare myself and understand in what capacity, in what role, if the club wants me... A lot of things would have to fall into place for me to return, but we’ll see. I’m not thinking about it at the moment."
Modric continued:
“Right now, I’m focused on playing football, but as I said before, Madrid is my home and of course it would be a dream. But we’ll see, without forcing anything. If, when I retire, we find something where I can be useful and where I can feel important, then why not? But we’ll see. There is plenty of time to think about that.”
Luka Modric also spoke about his future as a player:
"I feel good, I still have the passion, the ambition and the energy. And as long as I feel this way, I want to keep playing. How long will that last at my age? I can’t tell you. It could be two months, three months, six months, a year, two years... I don’t know. I don’t want to give an answer now and then regret it later. I’ll take it step by step, game by game, month by month, listening to my body and seeing how I feel, and then I’ll decide with complete peace of mind. We’ll see how long it lasts. I don’t know whether this will be my final year in football or whether I’ll continue beyond it, but what I can tell you is that I feel good and I’m still enjoying it.”
