Koni De Winter, fresh from a very disappointing performance against Ferencváros in the previous round of the Europa League, risks being left out of the Belgian national team's plans for quite some time.
Confirmation comes directly from the words of head coach Mark van Bommel, who has chosen to leave De Winter out of the squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Turkey (12 November) and Italy (15 November).
Van Bommel's words:
“Koni de Winter is absent because he did not feel comfortable with his situation and decided not to come here. It is his choice, I cannot do anything about it. I spoke to him and explained the situation to him. As a coach, former player and father. It has to be accepted, but this has consequences in the long term. He is 24 years old and is a responsible person,” Mark van Bommel stated.
Why did De Winter refuse the callup from the Belgium national team?
In the previous international break, and during the first four matches of the Nations League group against Italy, France and Turkey, De Winter had not played a single minute in a Belgium shirt. However, the other Milan player, Diego Moreira, is included in the list of players selected for the upcoming fixtures.
