Nothing worked for Ruben Amorim's Milan on Thursday against Ferencvaros. The problem was above all a mental one, because the team took to the pitch with a completely wrong attitude.
Speaking about this, former Rossoneri defender Alessandro Costacurta told La Gazzetta dello Sport:
"Can a winning mentality be something that can be trained? Of course it can, through many techniques. You can leave a player out for two matches and then see whether he has understood. Or, with someone else, you can put him straight back in because you expect him to understand immediately. And then you can explain it: explain that at that moment you were not in the right frame of mind, you did not have the right mentality.
If you have the opportunity to play for a team like Milan and you cannot find within yourself the desire and determination to approach every challenge as if it were a derby, you must stay at home. Or simply on the bench.
Am I absolving Amorim? He may not have fully understood the situation, otherwise why would he have fielded such a team? The first half was unwatchable. It is also true that there is a difference between technical ability and attitude: perhaps the players trained well in the days leading up to the match, but then got their approach completely wrong.
An example of commitment? I would say Pavlovic, always attentive, with the attitude that everyone should have. It may be easier to find that attitude when you are a regular starter, but at the same time, precisely those who get an opportunity should be breathing fire and 'tearing up' the pitch whenever they are called upon."
