The New Stadium project was assigned to Populous who will be building the Cathedral design. General manager of Populous Italia, Declan Sharkey, explained what it means to have concluded the agreement with Inter and Milan to the microphones of Milanpress.it:
"The opportunity to work on a project of this magnitude and prestige is exciting. From a professional point of view, the clubs' ambition to build a world-class home will allow us not to compromise in the development of design, using the most innovative technologies and work systems capable of offering fans a unique experience of stadium, at the highest of 21st century standards."
"I think that for the clubs the project was able to capture the spirit of Milan. The hunger for the future and at the same time the desire to stay in touch with with itself. The new stadium, innovative, sustainable and inclusive, will also be able to keep track of the historic architecture of the city, with a tribute to its symbols, the Duomo and the Gallery. This new home of the fans will have an incredible atmosphere. Together with the clubs, we have thought of a sports and recreational district, a point of reference for the citizens."
How did you follow the clubs' idea of building a district to make the stadium usable 7 days a week?
"Since its foundation, Populous has had the opportunity to design approximately 1,325 stadiums or arenas around the world. In 2019 we completed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a project whose urban impact could be comparable to that of the new San Siro. The new stadium regenerated the neighborhood, bringing new visitors to the area, and creating job opportunities. Thinking about a new stadium means embracing a broad vision for sports venues that bring value to the community", said Declan Sharkey, "The development of the masterplan as a whole is central to the vision of the new San Siro, the stadium is located within 50,000 square meters of green space, with new sports facilities and recreational spaces that will be open to the public."
