Florentino Perez continues to believe in Super League project: “Our beloved sport is ill…”

Real Madrid's president, Florentino Perez, used his club’s annual general assembly to once again back the idea of creating a European Super League to continue to attract new fans.

The Spaniard continues to believe in the Super League project and he insists that European football needs a change. Here are his words:

"Our beloved sport is ill, losing global leadership. The young people are increasingly less interested, a trend to revert before it is too late. The new generations prefer other spectacles, like the online platforms or video games. They are asking for a quality product that football does not provide, because the current competitions do not attract them… even the final phases. With maximum respect to the national leagues, the big European leagues should offer matches throughout the year, matches that bring the young people back. The Super League would not be a closed competition. The president of the ECA said that Madrid was afraid of the competition. It would still be necessary to remind him who Real Madrid is."

Florentino Perez added:

"UEFA is increasing the number of games between irrelevant teams. With that, it will only accelerate the decadence of European football. According to Forbes, Madrid is the 13th most valuable club in the world and before we were fifth. There are only three football clubs in that ranking. The trend is inarguable. They must be doing something very well in the United States and very badly in the old Europe. La Liga has lost subscribers on TV and their strategy is to charge more to the few who are left. They have turned a product that should be popular into a luxury product. We’ve just won the 14th Champions League and we are already thinking about the 15th. We believe in work and in the spirit of permanent improvement to achieve the impossible. Nadal and Djokovic have played against each other 59 times, is this boring? Real Madrid and Liverpool have only met nine times in 67 years. What’s the point of depriving fans of these matches."
