AC Milan's legend and current technical area director, Paolo Maldini, has spoken to the microphones of Milan TV about the derbies and how he experienced them as a player before:
"My record in derby games played? Well, it's beautiful. I like it. Naturally, having played more games than anyone else in Milan, then it's normal..."
On the feelings before a derby game:
"A derby, or Milan-Juventus or Milan-Naples at the time, could have given you a different charge. This emotional charge limited me especially in the early years, I didn't play the first 2-3 derbies at a high level. Once I got used to that kind of stress it was the match I was looking forward to the most, because in the end we live for those emotions anyway."
Maldini on his goal in the 1994 derby:
"I wanted to shoot, but I didn't think of putting it in the corner. It was a difficult ball, I think from Donadoni. I was at the edge of the area, from there I had few things to do. Sometimes something more instinctive can surprise even the goalkeeper and that's what happened."
On his role:
"Being a defender, I've never been attracted by necessarily having to score goals. Sure, maybe it's the best feeling after winning a title, but it's never been a fixation for me. I have always tried to understand my role as a defender."
Maldini on the 6-0 derby victory:
"It's important for us, not for them. We played away from home, by the way. The first half was much more balanced than what the result said at the end. We have found the right keys to hurt a team that was actually in trouble."
On the Champions League semi-finals against Inter:
"They took place over 6 very intense days. There was a kind of electricity, not only around the two teams but also throughout the city. The feeling of fear, which is part of the sports world, and the feeling of excitement, I have to say, are matched only by the Champions League finals."
