AC Milan, in the Europa League, will play against Stade Rennais. The Rossoneri's first step towards conquering a never-before-won cup begins in France. It's a competition where, on paper, the Rossoneri can go very far. However, a lot will depend on the health of the squad and also the transfer market window.

One of Milan's major problems in this early part of the season, no need to deny it, has been injuries. Pioli has never really had the full squad available, and obviously, this has heavily impacted the team's performances.

Today, Corriere dello Sport reports the words Franco Baresi, former Milan legendary captain and current honorary honorary Vice President of the club, said yesterday on the sidelines of the Europa League draw: "We need to aim to win, with great respect for the opponent, but we must aim high. It will be played in February, there's time, hopefully, we'll have the team at full strength."

The concept expressed is simple: Milan can progress in Europe, but they need the entire squad available, and fortunately, the playoffs will be in two months. That's enough time to recover players, provided they are careful not to lose any more along the way. Last Sunday, in the final league match, two more players were 'lost.'

AC Milan could strengthen Stefano Pioli's team in January's market session

The second element that could contribute to a successful European campaign is the possibility of strengthening in January. Undeniable is Milan's need for a defender: both Pierre Kalulu and Malick Thiaw will be out for the long term, and currently, only Fikayo Tomori and Simon Kjaer are available, with Marco Pellegrino possibly returning around New Year.

The simplest market solution is Matteo Gabbia: recalling the '99-born player, developed at Milan, from his loan at Villarreal. Giorgio Furlani said they haven't discussed it yet (READ HERE), and the agent also denied that there were contacts (READ HERE).

It's a low-cost solution that ensures an easy integration into the group. Another name currently in vogue is Clement Lenglet: currently at Aston Villa but owned by Barcelona. The ideal solution would be a loan with an option to buy, but an agreement needs to be reached between the two clubs, and it won't be easy.

There could also be a loan move for Jakub Kiwior from Arsenal: there's competition from Napoli, but the Gunners are reluctant to let him go.

For the striker's position, Milan might also make a move for Serhou Guirassy, who remains under the spotlight: he has a release clause close to 18 million euros.
