As reported by Tuttosport in today's print edition, on Sunday evening against Napoli at San Siro, Stefano Pioli will reach 220 matches as Milan coach, a milestone probably unimaginable in October 2019, when he signed his first Rossoneri contract.
Yet here we are, despite the many difficult and stressful moments after the Scudetto, the ex Fiorentina coach has always known how to handle the situation, sometimes well, and sometimes he could have done better. 220 is the same number of times Sacchi sat on the bench, but not one more.
This means that on Thursday, February 15, in the Europa League against Rennes, Pioli will surpass his famous colleague and aim for the Liedholm goal, which is at 280.
So much has been said about the Rossoneri bench between January and December. Fans in particular have somewhat sided with the slogan "#PioliOut" and hope for the arrival of a new face. The drops that have made the vase overflow have undoubtedly been the too many lost derbies, the discontinuity, and last but not least, the decidedly too many injuries. But for the moment, Pioli is the Milan coach and will remain so, unless unlikely storms arise, at least until June. After that, the parties will sit down and understand what is best for everyone.
