Milan’s Theo and Leao: two key players, but what does the future hold for them?

In the surreal atmosphere of San Siro, with the silent protest of much of the crowd, the Milan team secured their spot in the next Italian Super Cup, but what made the news were the exclusions of Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez from the starting eleven.

Pioli, without directly mentioning them, justified the decision to initially leave out 4 starters (Calabria, Tomori, Hernandez, and Leao, note) due to not being in brilliant physical condition because of the many commitments of a long season. However, many interpreted the exclusions, especially of Rafa and Theo, as a signal that the coach wanted to send to the environment: the mediocre European journey of this season and the two lost derbies were also spoiled by performances not up to par of the two strongest players in the squad.

Clearly, this is an interpretation that will never be confirmed by the directly involved parties, especially in such a delicate phase.

What remains, however, are the marvelous 45 minutes played by Leao: a delightful assist for Pulisic's first goal, a crossbar still trembling, and the solo run for goal number 8 in the league. Rossoneri emotions underlined with applause from part of the crowd to seal the peace with the Portuguese star after difficult moments.

Regardless of this controversial end to the season, Rafa is the only big player sure to stay at Milan even in the next season.

Different story for Theo: the feeling is that something has changed this season with his coach. The Frenchman is at a crossroads: to bind himself even more to Milan or to succumb to the temptations of Bayern Munich and a very important contract? In the coming weeks, we will certainly know more.
