Guest of The Secret Balance of Champions, Marco van Basten talked about the ankle injury that forced him to end his career in 1995. Ajax and AC Milan legend, the Dutchman has never been spared by a fragile physique, which pushed him to retire at an early age.
“It was horrible, a very sad story. I was at the highest level of my career, European champion with the Netherlands, we won everything with AC Milan, I earned the Ballon d'Or, but this ankle injury broke everything. My mistake surely must have been have poor communication with the doctors. I have been operated on by the best practitioners, but it never worked. I was told that I would play again a few weeks after my intervention: that was never the case."
The former legendary striker evokes his suffering: "The worst part was not to no longer play football, but not to be able to walk. I went from being a legend who won everything to being a disabled person. I no longer felt my leg."
