When Giorgia Spinelli scored the equalizer against San Marino in the last matchday of Serie A, both her and the AC Milan Women’s team defense reached an impressive milestone this season, well, for a defender.
Since the beginning of the season, considering both Serie A and Coppa Italia, Spinelli’s goal has been the seventh goal scored by a defender from the Milan squad, surpassing previous mark from 2018/2019, when the defenders were responsible for 5 goals, and equaling 2019/2020's. This means that 19% of the goals this season were scored by defenders and, of each of the center-backs who played for the rossonere (Mendes, Fusetti, Vitale, Hovland and Agard) until this day, Giorgia Spinelli is the more prolific so far, finding the back of the net 4 times, trailing only by 2 goals from left fullback/winger Linda Tucceri-Cimini, who has 6 goals to her name since 2018-2019.
Note that both Tucceri-Cimini and Bergamaschi were considered defenders though in this season’s 352 they play in midfield, because in the previous seasons they played mostly as fullbacks.
