Mattia Caldara, Italian centre-back of the Rossoneri, spent more than 1 season at Atalanta on loan. The Bergamo side had an option to exercise their right to secure the player on a permanent transfer. However, that did not happen because the player did not impress enough.
According to Calciomercato.com, there are two ideas for the future of Caldara whose contract is set to expire in 2023: either a permanent sale or another loan move.
The source highlights how Milan signed the player from Juventus for a fee which was set at 35 million euros. Caldara, right now, still weighs in the budget for about 14 million euros, a figure that no one is ready to put on the table. Also, his salary must be added to it, which is set at 3 million euros net per season. This is obviously a huge obstacle to any negotiations regarding the Italian defender.
Technical director Paolo Maldini is aware of this issue. But, the transfer market window is still long and there could be some solutions to be found.
Genoa, Hellas Verona and Cagliari were interested in Caldara, all with the loan formula and with them asking that Milan pays part of the player's salary as well since it's too high for them. This idea, is not being considered for the market men of the Rossoneri at the moment.
If there are not solutions, then Caldara will eventually have to stay with Milan and be part of Stefano Pioli's rotation squad, concludes the website.
