Newcomer Lazio were caught in a landslide of goals as AC Milan had a dominant outing in Serie A 2021-22 Matchday 3, trashed the laziali 1-8, and head to the international break in full points at the top of the table.
As usual, captain Giacinti lead the rossonere to winning ways, scoring a poker while Thomas netted a brace with Vero and youngster Serena Cortesi completing the scoresheet. Martin pulled one back for the hosts.
Here are five talking points from this fixture:
1 – Oh captain, my captain
Once again, the Milan fans witnessed an award-winner performance by Valentina Giacinti. Milan’s#9 took advantage of every weakness Lazio defense has shown in their previous games, dancing across the offside line while Thomas, Adami, Bergamaschi all slid the ball behind the defense and the offside trap. Besides the goals, the striker has displayed signs of her evolution and growth as a player.
2 – Codina is already indispensable
Alongside Fusetti and Agard, Codina makes Milan’s defense one of the strongest, if not the strongest in the league. During the first half, the defensive trio kept the hosts at bay.
After the half-time break, Ganz decided to grant some playing minutes for Arnadottir, giving some rest to the Spaniard, and it was clear the difference between them. Codina behaves and plays like an experienced player, with class and refined technique while the Icelandic has talent but is still a work in progress.
3 – Lindsey Thomas is back in the game
After a few poor performances, the French striker seems to be back in her better form, providing assists and scoring her goals for the team. For this new formation to work, both Thomas and Vero must be in top form and, while Vero is a very regular player, Thomas was struggling a bit to find her better positioning on the pitch until yesterday’s game.
4 – Adami and Jane's partnership is starting to click and jell
Another dominant performance by Milan’s midfield duo. Their partnership is starting to jell as they have complementary characteristics and Milan is benefiting from it.
5 – A good response from the bench
After a demolishing first half by the rossonere, Ganz has the feeling to use the bench and give some reserves some playing minutes and it paid off as Longo, Miotto, and especially Cortesi gave very good responses, including here a goal from a free-kick beautifully taken by Cortesi.
Now, the rossonere head to the International break with 9 out of 9 points, on the top of Serie A's table with a goal difference of +12.
