In a surprising fixture, valid for the 23rd round of Serie A, Lecce emerged victorious with a 2-1 win against Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, handing Atalanta their second defeat in their last three games.
The match opened with a goal from Assan Ceesay, putting Lecce in the lead after only four minutes of the game. Despite Atalanta's persistent efforts to equalise, though, the Giallorossi managed to put the ball in the net again through 26-year-old French midfielder Alexis Blin with just 15 minutes left on the clock, rendering Hojlund's goal three minutes before the end useless for Atalanta.
The Bergamo-based club, therefore, remains at 41 points in the standings, three points behind AC Milan who are their next opponents in a match scheduled for next Sunday at 8:45 pm (Italy's time) at the San Siro stadium. To make matters worse for Gian Piero Gasperini's team, Turkish defender Merih Demiral received a yellow card in the fifth minute of the game against Lecce for unsportsmanlike conduct (protesting against Ceesay's goal), earning him a yellow card and ruling him out of the upcoming match against AC Milan.
