Alexis Saelemaekers was presented today as the new player for Bologna. During the press conference, the former AC Milan player, who has joined Bologna on loan with an option to buy, explained why he decided to leave the Rossoneri and move to Motta's team:
"Before Maldini's exit, there was no intention to leave, but once some situations changed, I decided to seek another opportunity in agreement with the club. I found it, and I'm happy,"
Saelemaekers added:
"Where does this fit in my career? I came here because I felt great confidence from the coach and the club; it was important for me at this point in my career. After some great years at Milan and winning the Scudetto, I wanted more playing time, and I believe Bologna is the right choice. Spain? Yes, there was an opportunity, but I felt more confidence in Bologna."
On the call from Thiago Motta, Saelemaekers said:
"The coach called me after a conversation with my agent. He said Bologna was looking for a player with my characteristics, and I've never had such a conversation with a coach in my life. He convinced me right away. He talked about trust and ambition and how much we could grow. Then I spoke with the director, and I felt the same trust. Everything was there to say yes."
Saelemaekers added:
"Pressure? It's there, but it's positive. Position? I spoke with the coach; I don't think there's a set position yet, although we have ideas about an offensive role, and we'll evaluate it together. He'll decide, and I'm at his disposal. Attacking midfielder? Yes, we discussed it, as well as right and left winger. I always try to give my best for the shirt I wear, and even Milan fans recognized that. I know many were saddened by my departure."
On his weaknesses:
"Weaknesses? Let's say I haven't scored much; my offensive statistics weren't great, but I'm working on it. I joined Milan as a right-back, but Pioli decided to use me further up the pitch."
Regarding his physical condition, Saelemaekers said these words:
"I'm in good shape, unfortunately, I had a minor ankle sprain, but I'm working to be ready for Verona. I'm optimistic."
