AC Milan's head coach, Stefano Pioli, has spoken to the media in a press conference tonight ahead of the match against Newcastle in St. James' Park stadium.
Here are his statements:
What did you say to the team earlier on the field?
"It was a very simple thing, especially because we had already talked a lot this morning. We have only one goal, only one chance: to win the game. We know what awaits us, which opponent and environment we'll face. It's the first real crossroads of the season."
Did you talk to Zlatan Ibrahimovic?
"We spoke yesterday. I believe he has always been a top player, facing all challenges with intelligence. He will definitely be an added value and an asset to the entire club."
Pioli added:
"We know the importance of the game and the importance of staying in Europe. We all expect to play a great game against a very tough opponent. We have to make this moment our moment."
Regarding Tonali's situation, Pioli said:
"We are very close to him; he has been a very positive guy with us and crucial for the team's growth. Unfortunately, he fell into a delicate situation. We stand by him, and I hope this experience will help him perform better in the future."
Do you think Tonali will be able to return to high levels?
"There are no doubts about his football qualities. Surely, Newcastle has acquired an excellent player."
Will Leao start the game?
"He's doing well, he's in a condition to start the game."
Were you aware of Tonali's gambling addiction? Pioli said:
"Absolutely not. I believe I have a fairly open relationship with the players; I try to talk to them about many things, but we don't always know everything they do."
The Newcastle club is not happy with the situation after spending all that money...
"I believe that when they bought a player like him, Newcastle made a good deal. But then, no one could have predicted what happened."
Is this the most important match since you started coaching Milan? Pioli said:
"Yes, it is very important. We have already played many high-level matches, but this is definitely the most important one for this season."
