In the days following the unpleasant incident in Udine, many have expressed their solidarity with AC Milan's goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
In fact, Mayor of Udine, Alberto Felice De Toni, immediately proposed granting honorary citizenship to the AC Milan goalkeeper as a gesture of solidarity and in the fight against the social scourge of racism.
Today, the mayor was interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Here are his words:
"An accusation of racism emerged against a city that is not racist. It is a municipality that, by statute, is inspired by values of democracy and solidarity. Offering citizenship to Maignan seems to me a strong way to express solidarity with the man. He had the courage to leave the field. I hope that Mike, to whom I have sent a voice message, can become a symbol in the fight against racism."
Udine's mayor continued:
"We need to unite with people; here we are not talking about football, but about individuals. We immediately collaborated with Milan and the (Milan) foundation. They were happy. The idea is to cooperate and organise. The Sports Councilor Chiara Dazzan is active and sensitive on these issues. And we want to invite Maignan to Udine."
