Maurizio Sarri speaks out again, this time through Sky Sport Italia microphones. The former coach of Lazio, Juventus, and Napoli discussed the lack of calls from Italian clubs, hinting at some disappointment for not being considered:
"It's clear that this is a point we need to question. I won't hide that a couple of clubs not reaching out to me left me a bit disappointed. In my opinion, in a couple of situations... I'm not saying they should have hired me because those are decisions a club has to make. But at least listening to me for fifteen minutes, I think that was deserved... It's something I can't influence, or rather, I can influence if I can understand why."
Were the two clubs in question Milan and Fiorentina?
"I won't name names, but they are two clubs that, in my opinion, were suitable for me..."
What about an experience in the Premier League, at Chelsea?
"(Leaving Chelsea) was a fundamental mistake in my career", said Sarri, "There were the conditions to stay, a difficult club where you probably don't finish the second season, as happened to everyone in the Abramovich era. We did a good job. The team had finished fifth the year before, then we finished third behind Liverpool and City, who had a bit more than everyone else. We won the Europa League with 13 victories and lost a League Cup final on penalties against City after eliminating Liverpool and Tottenham, who reached the Champions League final that year. I made a huge mistake that I should have avoided. The desire to return to Italy should have been lower than the desire to stay in the Premier League, which should have been higher."
When will we see Sarri back on the bench?
"Hopefully as soon as possible. I spent the first two months with family problems and other issues where I didn't miss football much. Now the desire is growing again, so I think in a month or two I'll be eager. At this point in the market, I think it's difficult to find a solution that isn't abroad, but I struggle to go abroad."
