The National Team seen last night against Spain might have given the impression to many, both professionals and fans, of being very, very similar to Stefano Pioli's AC Milan of the last two years, especially in the defensive aspect. Despite the 1-0 defeat due to an own goal, Spalletti's Azzurri suffered greatly against the Spaniards, barely managing to put up adequate resistance except for Donnarumma's saves.
The tactical aspect
What particularly recalled the recent Milan were the gaps between the midfield and defense left by the Azzurri, just as often happened with the Rossoneri: incorrect pressing times, too many players drawn to the ball, an opponent receiving the ball between the lines with open space ahead.
Therefore, the new Milan coach Paulo Fonseca must absolutely learn from these mistakes (perhaps also watching Spalletti's Italy) to address these gaps. First and foremost, for example, by adapting his ideas to the players and not the other way around.
The New Midfielder
It's not just about the coach. To assist the team's defensive play, the management will look for a midfielder on the market with more defensive characteristics compared to those currently in the squad. At the moment, the two main names on Moncada and Ibrahimovic's lists are Youssouf Fofana, a 1999-born Frenchman playing for Monaco, and Mats Wieffer, a 24-year-old from Feyenoord; two midfielders with different characteristics but with excellent numbers who could help Fonseca avoid making the same mistakes as Pioli and Spalletti.
