The details of a new three-year commercial agreement between the Rossoneri and the Democratic Republic of Congo were presented (which we told you about a few days ago already).
As reported by Corriere della Sera, only a few details remain in a long and broad-reaching project. The back of Milan's shirt will feature a slogan promoting the DRC, (formerly Zaire). It is expected to be something similar to “Visit Rwanda” that appears on Arsenal’s jersey.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, which is eight times the size of Italy, is currently experiencing significant instability. In the northeastern part of the nation, a war is ongoing with rebel groups that the United Nations, the EU, and the US believe are armed by Rwanda.
For this reason, the country is a destination that the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against visiting, creating a sort of contradiction with the club’s recommendation to visit and promote tourism in this nation, as relayed via Calciomercato.com.
The agreement between Milan and the DRC is part of a broader project, coordinated with Congolese authorities and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The goal is also to provide social support to the population.
The Congo brings back sad memories for Italians: in 2021, Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio was killed in an ambush near the village of Kibumba. Milan has contacted Attanasio’s widow, Zakia Seddiki, whose 'Mama Sofia' Foundation is active in those regions, working in healthcare, education, and access to clean water.
Fondazione Milan will launch a series of projects with this foundation and various NGOs working for the benefit of the Democratic Republic of Congo and local communities, especially children. There are also plans to open a Milan Academy in the country as well.
