La Repubblica newspaper, in this morning's print edition, spoke about former AC Milan player, Sandro Tonali.

One year later, from the vice of gambling to the virtue of playmaking. On October 12, 2023, he left the Coverciano training camp after a police raid for the betting case.

Now, however, he is a rejuvenated player shining in Spalletti's midfield. Milan fans have a different kind of regret when looking at the picture of the Florence-Rome train with a trio of friends: Gabbia, the only one still on Milan's roster at Milanello, Daniel Maldini, and Tonali himself, a protagonist of the 2022 Scudetto.

Maldini, the father, explained to Repubblica: "If Massara and I had stayed as directors, we would have kept him."

The young man from Lodi, born on May 8, 2000, exactly forty years after Franco Baresi, blossomed at Brescia, was compared to Pirlo even for a vague physical resemblance, and was ready to ask Gattuso for permission to wear the number eight shirt and cut his salary because he hadn’t lived up to his own expectations.

He dreamed of becoming Milan's captain: "My story is a fan’s fairy tale" he said to Repubblica in 2022. But in the summer of 2023, the American Milan sold him. And in the document where Washington Harbour presents to investors the acquisition of RedBird shares for 150 million euros, the reasons for the sale are crystal clear: the 59.5 million in capital gains. Now, he must increase his tally of caps (seventeen) for the national team, which today, October 12, 2024, hopes to rediscover America in two years, at the World Cup.
