Two days before the Nations League match against Poland, Rafael Leao spoke at a press conference from Portugal’s training camp, addressing questions about his current form at Milan, the initial challenges for Paulo Fonseca, and more.
Costacurta, a Milan legend, recently criticized your intensity, saying it was lacking. How do you respond to these critiques?

“Clearly, I don’t agree. I’ve had great seasons at Milan. The season has just started. Of course, I’m not the perfect player, and there are moments when I can do much better—I’m very self-critical. These critiques don’t shake me, though. I have people at Milan and on the national team who help me grow. In fact, these criticisms motivate me to push myself even more on the field.”
How do you assess the season so far? Leao commented:
“I always look forward. I’m pleased with what I’ve done in the last two matches. I don’t dwell on previous games; I focus on the next one, and now on the games here with the national team. Overall, things are going well, but of course, they could be much better because I want to achieve great things with Milan and the national team.”
What are your thoughts on Milan coach Paulo Fonseca and the challenges you’ve faced with him?

“These things happen. I have nothing against the coach. It’s a resolved issue. I don’t like sitting on the bench; I always want to help the team. But it’s the coach who makes the decisions. Whether for the national team or Milan, I always try to give my best to help my team.”
Is the national team a sort of escape for you? Leao replied:
“Regardless of whether I play well or not, I really enjoy being at Milan. I try to give my all. I don’t see the national team as an escape. I feel a lot of trust from both sides. When things aren’t going well, it’s normal for people to criticize. I’ve been at Milan for five years, and I’ve gotten used to that pressure.”
