Anyone who thought (or hoped) that the 0-4 in Udine could be the long-awaited turning point in Milan's season had to immediately think again: on Sunday evening, another defeat arrived for the Rossoneri against Atalanta, the eighth in 14 games against the top eight clubs in the Serie A standings. After 33 matchdays, Sergio Conceicao's side has 51 points, and in the last ten years, only once have they done worse at this point in the championship, that was in the 2014-2015 season with Filippo Inzaghi on the bench (43 points in that case).

Milan, who had started the season with very different objectives, can only salvage the year slightly by winning the Italian Cup, which is now also the only way to earn a place in the Europa League. In the league, however, unfortunately the only thing left to do is try to improve on the current ninth place and attempt to at least finish in the top eight, in order to avoid having to play the third round of the Italian Cup in August (there would also be the fourth round in the autumn). The top eight in the standings will instead enter the competition directly in the round of 16.

Among the most disastrous numbers of Milan’s season is certainly the one concerning direct clashes against the teams that are ahead of the red and black side in the standings: of the 16 matches against Inter, Napoli, Atalanta, Bologna, Juventus, Roma, Lazio, and Fiorentina, there are still two to be played — the return matches against Bologna and Roma — but in the fourteen matches played so far, the Rossoneri have brought home a meager 8 points out of a possible 42, beating only Inter in the first leg of the derby.
