Milan’s season isn’t even over yet, but fans can already start to worry about what will happen in the summer.
The exclusion from any form of European competition, sealed by the Rossoneri’s disastrous season, forces the club to review its strategic plans—especially given a budget that, after two consecutive years in the black, will close in the red. To cover this unexpected shortfall, moves will be made in the transfer market, particularly with outgoing players.
Reijnders to City
After two years of positive financial results, this season for the Rossoneri will end with -25 million in revenues, to which the 80 million lost due to missing out on Champions League qualification must be added. Faced with this scenario, as reported this morning by Corriere dello Sport, the Rossoneri club is set to sacrifice one of its key players to cover this deficit. The number one candidate to leave Milanello is Tijjani Reijnders. The Dutch midfielder, who this year has proven himself to be among the elite in European football and who recently signed a contract extension until 2030, has long been on the radar of Pep Guardiola and Manchester City. An offer from the English club is expected in the coming days: the initial bid will be around 60 million, with the Milan management aiming to push it up to 70 million plus bonuses—a figure at which the deal could be closed and the financial situation patched up, at least on paper.
The other key players
News of a possible farewell from Reijnders, following one of the saddest seasons in recent Rossoneri history, certainly does not lift the spirits of fans—on the contrary, it generates even more discontent and, as a result, further pressure on the entire fourth floor of Casa Milan, on Igli Tare (set to become the new sporting director), and also on whoever will be chosen as the new coach.
And Reijnders is not the only player in the squad on the market. To balance the books, Corriere dello Sport continues, the club will try to take advantage of the likely buyouts of Kalulu by Juve and Adli by Fiorentina, as well as the sales of Pobega and Okafor, who will likely return to the club. Another significant sum could come from Alexis Saelemaekers, although negotiations with Roma still have to be built from the ground up. Many unknowns and question marks remain regarding the future of Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez, whose contracts expire in the summer of 2026.
