Former AC Milan executive, Frederic Massara, has returned to AS Roma. He is now their new sporting director after an experience at Stade Rennais in the French top division from July 2024 until May 2025.
The 56-year-old Italian spoke to the AS Roma club’s official channels, explaining his vision and objectives:
"Returning to this club is a great source of pride. At Roma, I experienced significant moments in my career, becoming attached to the city and the club’s tradition. Beyond the feelings I’ve held onto over the years, I can’t wait to embrace the sporting challenge that awaits all of us."
How did you find the Friedkins?
"I found a very determined and passionate family, eager to bring joy to Roma fans and to win trophies. They are truly very determined, and we will have to work hard to live up to those expectations."
And you’ve been reunited with Ranieri... Massara said:
"It’s a great pleasure to see him again, even in a new role. He’ll be important for me as well—he represents a bridge toward a more immediate return to Roma’s world. It’s a great pleasure to have him back."
Gian Piero Gasperini will be on the bench...
"That’s something we need. We all have to hold ourselves to high standards, and Gasperini will embody that spirit in the best way possible. His results in recent years have been extraordinary, and we are convinced he can give the team a clear identity and bring that fighting spirit we are all looking for."
What do you think of the current squad?
"It’s a quality squad, and they proved it in the latter part of the season with their results. There are many strong players, and we are confident we can build an even stronger team."
What will Roma do in the transfer market?
"There’s a lot of talk, and we are aware there are strict Financial Fair Play constraints. We will work toward sustainability, but still make moves that serve the team’s growth."
What will you look for in the market? Massara answered:
"We’ll look for players who are useful, functional, and strong. The goal is to build an increasingly stronger Roma."
What are the objectives?
"Roma hasn’t played in the Champions League for many years, and that’s a shame. But this is not the time for declarations—it’s time to work."
What would you like to say to the fans?
"I feel a great sense of trust from the Roma fans, from the club, and from the working group. That will push us to keep doing better and give everyone the satisfaction they deserve."
