Santiago Gimenez has spent 47 days away from training with the rest of the squad. The Mexican striker stopped on 28 October, during the second half of Atalanta v Milan, after a flare-up of an ankle issue. The same problem had already appeared during the summer while on international duty at the Gold Cup. The issue qualifies as serious, given the length of the injury and the resulting absence from matchday squads.
To gain further clarity, the player also travelled to the Netherlands for a specialist examination to analyse the issue in more detail. Information gathered points to surgery as an option to resolve the injury on a permanent basis, writes Milan News. Every scenario will receive full evaluation by the player together with Milan. No decision has been taken on the clinical path to follow.
Gimenez, ankle issue, no trip for the Supercoppa
Santiago Gimenez will not board the flight taking Milan to Saudi Arabia tomorrow for the Italian Super Cup. The Mexican striker, along with Matteo Gabbia, will stay at Milanello to continue individual programmes. Youssouf Fofana and Rafael Leao will travel, with Leao expected to start on the bench on Thursday evening against Napoli.
Milan transfer market, interest in Gimenez, possible standby...
Potential interest in 'El Bebote' from Premier League and Bundesliga clubs now looks set to enter a standby phase. Surgery would complicate any negotiation, unless a buying club accepts the risk of signing a player sidelined by injury.
