Milan continue to work on two parallel tracks. On one side there is the league, which must be played until the very end because the gap of seven points from Inter is difficult (very difficult) but not impossible. On the other side, there is planning for the future, shaping what the next Milan team will look like. Today’s edition of Tuttosport returns to what is the main transfer target for the defense: Mario Gila.

In a defensive department that has often been short on depth, Massimiliano Allegri needs more options so he can rely on greater tactical flexibility, especially if the team ends up competing in several tournaments. Meanwhile, the Spanish defender remains at the very top of Igli Tare’s shortlist. Gila is considered one of Tare’s "creations," and the ex Juventus head coach appreciates him greatly as well. Confirmation of this interest came on Monday evening, when a Milan scout was spotted in the nearly empty stands of the Stadio Olimpico during Lazio-Sassuolo, a clear sign that the defender is highly regarded.
Gila has already informed Lazio that he does not intend to renew his contract, which expires in 2027. As a result, the Roman club will likely be forced to sell him during the summer transfer window to avoid losing him for free the following year. That is why Milan sense an opportunity. However, a problem arises here: it is still unclear who will take charge of the club’s transfer operations moving forward. On one side there is CEO Giorgio Furlani, working with suggestions from chief scout Geoffrey Moncada. On the other side stands the sporting department led by Igli Tare.
Tare himself could prove to be the decisive factor in this deal. The signing of the Spanish defender was the final move of Tare’s era at Lazio, and it could also become the first signing of Milan’s next season. Gila can play both as the right-sided center-back and as the central anchor in a back three. The Spanish defender also knows Serie A well and would not face any major adaptation issues.
All of these are important factors in Allegri’s thinking. Now, however, it is time to step on the accelerator. The former Real Madrid player is also attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, which are ready to enter the race in the coming weeks. Milan will need to move early if they want to give Allegri the first new piece of the future Milan project.
