Two of the most attractive names in this summer transfer window, available on free transfers from 1 July, are undoubtedly the midfielder Leon Goretzka and the centre-forward Robert Lewandowski. No longer particularly young, they are nonetheless profiles with the right experience and leadership for a team (such as Milan or Juventus) that could aim to compete in the Champions League again next year.
According to Tuttosport, there will be a battle for both along the Milan–Turin axis. For Goretzka, Milan seem to be ahead: there had already been some contact in January from Tare, but the player chose to finish his season with Bayern, honouring his contract. Allegri also reiterated his appreciation for the midfielder in yesterday’s meeting with the club’s hierarchy and would very much like to have him; Spalletti has also pushed strongly for him.
As for Lewandowski, Juventus appear to be in a stronger position: the Polish striker’s entourage will be at San Siro on Sunday and will meet with the Bianconeri’s management. Milan, in this case, are being held back by a veto from CEO Giorgio Furlani, who is not as convinced by the deal as Tare and Allegri are.
Vice Modrić
Meanwhile, with next season in mind, Milan hope to enjoy Luka Modrić for at least another year. Naturally, the Croatian star will take his time to decide, also depending on the World Cup: at the end of the season there is an option to extend his contract by one year, which will be activated if the former Real Madrid player decides to stay. With a season ahead that also includes a European schedule, it is unthinkable that a now 41-year-old Modrić could play every match, which is why Allegri is also strongly pushing for a natural replacement.
For this role, the ex Juventus coach has identified Niccolò Fagioli, who managed to carve out a leading role in Fiorentina’s disastrous season and who showed his best form under Allegri at Juventus. Moreover, he is an Italian player, useful for UEFA squad registration. He is not the only name for midfield: Milan are also exploring Ismaël Koné of Sassuolo and Sven Mijnans of AZ Alkmaar.
