Milan’s revival never happened, if anything, the Rossoneri have sunk even lower and now seriously risk missing out on the Champions League. The Diavolo’s poor run continued with last night’s defeat against Atalanta at San Siro, and now all of their advantage over their rivals in the table has been wiped out.
It is true that the team coached by Max Allegri still controls its own destiny: two wins in the final two matches of the season would guarantee a top-four finish. However, Milan have now been overtaken by Juventus, caught by Roma, and Como are only two points behind.
This morning, Corriere della Sera reported that Milan’s collapse seems endless, and if they fail to qualify for the Champions League it would represent both a sporting and financial disaster, seriously complicating transfer-market plans and the club’s projects for next season. Qualification is still in Milan’s hands, but how can this team realistically take six points against Genoa and Cagliari? The squad no longer shows any signs of life, and even the fans have now had enough. After heavily protesting against the club (especially CEO Giorgio Furlani) many supporters left the stadium well before the final whistle.
Milan's total meltdown:
For weeks, attention had focused on the attack’s struggles, which are still evident and were confirmed again yesterday. But now the entire team appears to be in complete disarray, including Allegri himself, who no longer seems to know how to revive his Milan side. The late goals from Pavlovic and Nkunku from the penalty spot only added to the regrets at the end of a nightmare weekend in which all the teams behind them (Juventus, Como, and Roma) won. Milan, meanwhile, lost yet again, and the risk of missing out on the Champions League next season is now very real.
