Luca Bianchin, a journalist, commented as follows in La Gazzetta dello Sport on the possible new sporting director of Milan:
“Tony D’Amico is the most likely sporting director of Milan for next season. Giorgio Furlani already spoke to him a year ago and has now identified him as the sole candidate for 2026–27. The rest will be down to Gerry Cardinale and the ownership. Everyone knows that Tony D’Amico is the sporting director of Atalanta, that he worked at Hellas Verona, that he is 46 years old and on the rise. The names of the players he has bought and sold are becoming well known."
"As a player, D’Amico was a midfielder, a young man from Abruzzo in Popoli, with Pescara as his reference city. In Chieti he played with Fabio Grosso, who, not coincidentally, became the first coach chosen for his Verona side. At the height of his career he played for Cavese for six years, and in interviews he used to say: 'When Tatomir leaves, I’ll be happy to become captain.' That didn’t happen. When his turn came, the new coach Renato Cioffi (Renato, not Gabriele) chose someone else for the armband, and Tony took it badly. A few weeks later he was at Foggia, one of the decisions that changed his life. About himself he said: 'I was a tireless wide midfielder, but I couldn’t score even when I was one-on-one with the goal. And I was a bit of a pain… I argued with everyone, even my teammates.' At Milan, collaboration will be needed (though he knows this already, as he is used to it at Atalanta)."
"In the imagery surrounding Tony D’Amico, the central element is the cigarette. It has been written and said many times. He himself has said: 'I smoke too many cigarettes, especially during the transfer window, far too many. Up to two packs.' Who knows how many he smoked, perhaps leaning out of a window, when he once spent 13 hours in a hotel room in Milan to bring Dawidowicz to Verona. If one day he appoints Sarri, good luck to everyone."
