Giorgio Furlani is close to leaving Milan. The Rossoneri CEO, who has held this role since 2022 but has been at the club longer, appears inclined to resign in order to pre-empt a move by Gerry Cardinale that would have happened anyway: his removal from the role at the end of the season. This morning, confirming the report published yesterday by the MilanNews.it editorial team, colleagues at La Repubblica outlined the main reasons that led Furlani to reach this decision.

Giorgio Furlani will submit his resignation as CEO of Milan: a development that appears increasingly concrete and could take place as early as the final match of the season at San Siro against Cagliari, regardless of the result. It is a decision the Italian executive is said to have taken to prevent what would otherwise have been Cardinale’s choice as owner, who would in any case have decided to move on from Furlani. Behind this decision, however, there are deeper reasons. The biggest concerns the heavy "personal" criticism he received, which he did not take well: according to La Repubblica, the CEO was deeply affected by the treatment he received from the fans. His family also certainly influenced him, with pressure to return to London becoming increasingly felt.

Calvelli in action:

Furlani had also been in London with Ibrahimovic and Calvelli during the week between the match against Atalanta and the one against Genoa, apparently already understanding the direction things were heading. It is no coincidence that Massimo Calvelli has recently become actively involved: he was present at the “Ferraris” stadium together with Cardinale and Igli Tare, the Rossoneri sporting director whose future remains uncertain. It is precisely the former ATP chief executive who is beginning to pull the strings in the search for a new Milan CEO. At present, the two leading names are Giovanni Carnevali, long-time executive at Sassuolo, and Adriano Galliani, strongly backed by some internal voices within the Milan world. However, Calvelli has many names on his list, including foreign candidates. More will be known after the weekend.
