Ruben Amorim’s list of players who have been cut also includes Youssouf Fofana. This was former Milan manager Fabio Capello’s comment to Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper:
“Why give up on Fofana? Good question. I believe the coach wants to put his faith firmly in Jashari, whom he perhaps sees as better suited to his style of play. Milan, however, will depend heavily on Modric, who turns 41 in September... The Croatian won’t be able to play every game. Behind him, you have Comotto, a very interesting young player who it is right to keep in the squad. Then there’s Ricci, a reliable player, and Musah, who Amorim perhaps considers well suited to his possession-based style because of his ability to carry the ball. He is definitely less effective when it comes to distributing the ball and his tactical reading, though.”
But the biggest surprise among Milan’s outcasts is certainly Christopher Nkunku:
“It was thought that the Frenchman could rediscover his best form in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, but instead he has been left out of the project. Clearly, the coach saw something in training that he did not like.”
Regarding Rafael Leao’s future, Capello said:
“We’ll see. As I have already said, if Leao really does stay, things will not be easy for him. And to avoid San Siro turning against him after the statements he made this summer, he won’t need to have just a good season, but a super season.”
