After last Saturday’s match against Lazio, the Luka Modric situation became a talking point. The Croatian star was exposed by Milan’s decision to play with a two-man midfield against Lazio’s relentless pressing in the first half. While playing in a midfield two had not been a problem for the 41-year-old in the first three matches, the game at the Olimpico highlighted some natural limitations that will need to be assessed carefully. Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio also addressed the issue during an appearance on Carlo Pellegatti’s YouTube channel.
Gianluca Di Marzio’s comment on Luka Modric’s situation:
"Modric certainly needs to be put in the ideal conditions to show what he can still do at 41. So, if we are talking about the formation, it is clear that in a three-man midfield, with him playing as the deep-lying playmaker and two players running alongside him, it is better. If you play with two against a team that perhaps has three in midfield, they put you under pressure, don’t give you any room to breathe and make you run a lot without the ball, then obviously you also lose some of the technical ability and the world-class footballing mind that Modric possesses."
