Among the 68,000 spectators who packed San Siro yesterday for Milan’s Europa League opener, the presence of Antonio Conte certainly did not go unnoticed. The former Italy head coach inevitably fuelled speculation and excitement among Rossoneri fans, who are already dissatisfied with the team’s performances. This was even more evident after the final whistle, when the defeat to Benfica sparked the anger of the San Siro crowd, with Amorim and the players subjected to a barrage of boos.
Conte at San Siro, no transfer hint
According to Sport Mediaset, Conte watched Milan-Benfica live out of personal interest. There was therefore no contact that could be interpreted as a sign of an imminent move to the Rossoneri bench, but simply a matter of “professional observation”. His presence, however, inevitably brought his name back into the spotlight, with Conte having been linked with Milan several times in recent months, particularly during the team’s most difficult spells.
Meanwhile, Amorim is still trying to find the right formula and give his Milan a clear identity. Despite the difficult period and the San Siro protests, the feeling is that the Portuguese coach is not yet concretely at risk of being sacked. The upcoming match against Lecce, however, could carry particular weight. Should Milan fail to win, the international break could become a very long one for Amorim, with the pause potentially turning into a period of deep reflection for the Rossoneri hierarchy.
