AC Milan full-back Zachary Athekame is enjoying a prolific start to the season with Olympique Lyonnais. The Swiss player, who was signed by Milan from Young Boys last year, joined the French side on a straight loan for this season, giving him the opportunity to play more regularly and develop in an equally competitive environment. His start has been very encouraging, so much so that Athekame has earned a call-up to the senior Switzerland national team and made his first appearances for the side.
Meanwhile, 'L'Équipe' interviewed Marseille sporting director Gregory Lorenzi, who revealed that Olympique de Marseille had come close to signing Athekame before the player opted for Lyon.
Speaking about Athekame, a target Marseille ultimately missed out on to their rivals, Lorenzi said:
"Athekame signed for Lyon. Genesio spoke to him, and I spoke to him too… We held video calls with other players, but it was not possible to take things any further."
