Niclas Füllkrug has been one of the protagonists of an excellent start to the season with Werder Bremen: 11 goals in 9 matches between the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, the latest of which came on Tuesday, with a brace in the cup against his former club Borussia Dortmund. The second goal was one of the best of his career.
Füllkrug, the ex AC Milan striker, spoke exclusively to Milan News about his experience in Serie A with the Rossoneri.
Question: Already eleven goals and we are not even in November, following your return to Werder Bremen. Could you have scored more goals with the Rossoneri too?
“Yes, of course. Now it is a new season, but I could have scored a few more goals and provided a few more assists at Milan too. It was a somewhat unlucky period and not the most productive in terms of goals, but I still believe I put in several good performances. It was a really, really beautiful period, and I have great affection for Milan.”
Your winning goal against Lecce was a typical Füllkrug goal. What is it like to score at San Siro? Is it comparable to doing so at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund?
"Yes, it is quite similar to Dortmund. Dortmund is a little different, there are still a few more people there. But San Siro is incredible! It is a historic, special and truly, truly wonderful stadium," said Fullkrug.
Would you have liked to stay longer?
"It is difficult, difficult! In the end, the decision does not depend on just one person. There were West Ham and Milan. There have been many changes at the top of Milan and so… I still continue to follow Milan, I watch the matches and I am still in contact with some of the players and the lads. I wish them lots of luck. My best friend at Milan? Ardon Jashari."
Milan could have kept you for just €5 million. In hindsight… But was it the club that told you it did not want to keep you, or did you find out through the media?
"I cannot say anything about this… absolutely nothing…" Füllkrug smiles and prefers not to add anything else.
What about failing to qualify for the Champions League? Fullkrug replied:
“I would prefer to remain silent on this too, also because I do not know. And besides, it would be too much…”
Milan are experiencing an up-and-down season. Do you continue to follow them?
“When I can, I watch the matches. I still have some friends there whom I am in contact with. I wish Milan all the best.”
The Scudetto?
"We shall see…" (he laughs)
