Simon Kjaer announced on TV 2 Sport his decision to retire from professional football:
"Now is truly the right time to close this chapter of my life," said the Danish player, who had been without a club after his contract with Milan expired on June 30.
The former Rossonero played his final match on June 8 in a friendly with Denmark against Norway.
In recent months, Kjaer had offers from clubs in the Champions League, but none were able to convince him to say yes.
"In my mind, I wanted to finish my career at Milan. I knew very well that from there, in terms of seeking something else, I was so far away in my thoughts and in the process in my mind that I couldn’t have had a better ending," as relayed via Milannews.it.
Kjaer added:
"My end came at San Siro, and that experience... I knew very well that was my end."
The Dane played his last official match on May 25 against Salernitana at San Siro wearing Milan's shirt.
