Terrible officiating by Luca Pairetto, the referee from the Nichelino section who was assigned to officiate yesterday's Empoli - Milan match.
Beyond the specific incidents, where he was at times not helped by VAR—his overall game management was poor, and he lost control of the match almost immediately.
Then there were the controversial moments, such as Liberato Cacace’s challenge on Kyle Walker, a clear foul in real-time that was not whistled, and for which the Empoli player was not even booked.
On top of that, VAR failed to call Pairetto to review a possible red card.
Today, Corriere dello Sport explicitly states:
"Cacace should have been sent off."
The technical explanation reads: "A red card was missing for Cacace just 7 minutes in: the Empoli defender tried to anticipate Walker but struck him on the leg. The referee called the foul but took no further action."
