After AC Milan decided to return to the plan of building its new stadium together with Inter in the current San Siro area, many began asking: what will happen to the San Francesco site in San Donato Milanese, which the Rossoneri club had purchased to build its own new stadium independently?
Important updates on this matter come from Il Cittadino, which reports that "the development of the San Francesco area, where state-of-the-art sports facilities are planned, remains a priority for Milan."
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce of Varese has denied reports, which had spread throughout sporting circles across Italy, that it had been in contact with Gerry Cardinale and representatives of the RedBird fund regarding the possible purchase of the Malpensa Fiere area as land on which to build the NBA Europe arena. Instead, it has emerged that if Milan succeeds in its bid on European basketball, the €400 million arena would most likely be built in San Donato.
Sources close to the club confirm its intention to maximise the investment made in San Francesco (which the Rossoneri company purchased through its subsidiary SportLifeCity in 2024 in a €40 million deal) through a sports-focused project, details of which remain confidential for now.
This objective has, for several months, been at the centre of discussions between Milan representatives and the administration of Francesco Squeri, although no official proposal has yet been submitted to the municipal offices. Given the current circumstances, however, that step could still be taken by the developer before the end of April.
