Mr Massimiliano Allegri spoke to DAZN at the end of Milan–Atalanta 2–3, yet another defeat in 2026. Here are his statements:
A poor and negative performance. The late reaction is not enough…
“It is pointless talking about what has happened so far, we cannot change it. We just need to have a good week of training and focus on the Genoa match, which could be decisive for the Champions League. Tonight we played a good match for 10 minutes, then we conceded that goal. From the first situation we concede and we fell apart. After the 3–0 we had a good reaction and we started scoring again. Let’s try to see, even if it is not the right moment, it sounds like I am saying something extraordinary… We started scoring again. Now we have an important match in Genoa to play. We know it will be difficult but we must prepare for it.”
On the approach to the match. Milan, unlike Juventus and Roma, struggle at the first negative incident. Are you worried about this aspect given you still control your own destiny?
“It is normal that nobody would have expected this difficult period. During the season I expected there would be difficulties, so it must be faced with a strong sense of responsibility. We just need to… think, speak… Now we have an important match in Genoa, where they have always achieved excellent results at home. We must prepare properly with a strong desire to get this win, which we have been missing for some time.”
How can Leao be helped to perform better? He does not look calm:
“I believe that at this moment it is not a problem of Leao, Nkunku, Fullkrug, Gabbia or Maignan. The priority is the team. Rafa has had favourable chances, just as he did on Sunday in Reggio Emilia. It is just one of those periods, he is an important player, and he will be suspended on Sunday. We must work well and prepare the Genoa match properly.”
Milan came into the game at the moment Roma scored… Would it not be better to play these final rounds at the same time?
“You are right, but it is not something that can be done, we do not decide it. I do not know if the last two will be played simultaneously. We must win two matches, but first let’s try to win one. The team has always worked well, I have nothing to reproach the players for regarding what they are doing.”
On the protest and the distribution of responsibility, Allegri commented:
“When results are missing in these difficult moments, I am responsible: I am in charge of a group of players who have always given their maximum. At this moment there is no need to go and look at whose fault it is. We have a week to do well: just as we have achieved many wins during the season, we must do so again on Sunday. As for the Champions League being secure… I have always thought, said and repeated that this was absolutely not the case because we had not yet gone through a difficult period. We are in it now, and we hope to get out of it on Sunday.”
