It was meant to be the tournament of relaunch; at least for the moment, it has turned into a complicated start. Rafael Leão had identified the World Cup with Portugal as the ideal opportunity to attract the attention of major European clubs and strengthen his position in the transfer market, but the Portuguese national team’s debut did not produce the hoped-for effects.

A bitter World Cup start for Rafael Leao:

The draw against the Democratic Republic of the Congo national football team left more doubts than certainties around the Portuguese side, and Leão also came under scrutiny from fans and pundits. Coming on during the match, the forward was unable to make an impact and criticism was not lacking. A situation that risks further complicating an already delicate summer for the Milan number 10, as relayed via Milan News.

The next match against Uzbekistan national football team, managed by Fabio Cannavaro, could represent a turning point, but there is no certainty about his involvement from the start. The possibility of another appearance from the bench remains concrete and could increase the frustration of a player who sees this competition as a crucial showcase for his future.

AC Milan, what to do?

Meanwhile, AC Milan are closely observing how the situation develops. The Corriere dello Sport newspaper reports this morning, providing an overview of the forward’s uncertain future. In the coming weeks, meetings are scheduled with Ruben Amorim, who has been tasked with leading the new Rossoneri project. The Portuguese coach would like to understand the true intentions of his compatriot and assess whether the conditions still exist to build the team’s future together.

At present, however, the signs tell a different story. Leão seems inclined towards a new experience after seven seasons in a Rossoneri shirt and continues to look with interest at the major European leagues. Before any final decision, however, concrete offers will be needed. Both Leão and AC Milan could benefit: Leão could gain, and Milan could reinvest the money from his transfer. That is why the World Cup takes on decisive importance: for Leão it is not just an international competition, but a key step in the next chapter of his career. And also for AC Milan, who after many "would like to but cannot" moments might decide to turn the page and close an up-and-down chapter of their history.
