Looking back from January 2024 to today, one of the players to have featured most regularly for Milan has been Matteo Gabbia. The Rossoneri centre-back returned, almost by chance, from his loan spell at Villarreal, doing so with an unexpected level of maturity and development. In this way, the Italian defender gradually climbed the pecking order within the club until he became one of the regular starters for Milan. Things changed this summer with Amorim, however, and for the time being there is very little space for Gabbia.
Today, Corriere dello Sport reflects on Matteo Gabbia and his difficult moment. The headline reads: “Gabbia from starter to reserve: time to fight back.” Gabbia has made just two substitute appearances, totalling only 17 minutes, across six competitive matches. It should be noted that he was hampered by a minor physical issue both during the summer and in the early matches. This is also one of the reasons Amorim opted for De Winter, alongside the question of their different characteristics. That said, Gabbia will use the international break to catch up physically and tactically. He is feeling better now and will look to work closely with Amorim to fine-tune what is being asked of him.
