MilanoToday reported today on a meeting held regarding the topic of a new stadium in Milan between Steven Zhang, president of Inter, and Giuseppe Sala, the mayor of Milan. The news outlet had this to report regarding the meeting:
"During the meeting, the Inter president confirmed to the mayor Giuseppe Sala the medium-long term commitment of ownership to the club. In addition, president Steven Zhang stressed the strategic importance of the New Stadium project for Milan, in particular with a view to the hoped-for economic recovery Sala reiterating that continuity in Inter ownership is a fundamental aspect for the continuation of the authorization process for the new stadium, took note with satisfaction of the words of Steven Zhang.
The meeting took place in a climate of great cordiality and with the common goal of carrying on the dialogue on this dossier. Finally, the mayor congratulated himself on the conquest of the 19th Scudetto which allowed the most important trophy to be brought back to Milan or Italian sportsman after 10 years ".
The meeting appeared to be positive for both sides. Milan and Inter have shared the San Siro since 1947, and it seats the most fans in all of Italy. There have been pressures for the clubs to erect a new, more modern day stadium in Milan, and meetings have been ongoing. The financial burden most clubs have faced due to the pandemic has certainly not helped the project progress at an alarming rate, but it is encouraging to see meetings ongoing with important figureheads for the initiative.
