It is a night to forget for the AC Milan players and fans as the inexperienced referee Marco Serra made a huge and serious mistake in the match of the Rossoneri against Spezia.
The referee deprived Milan of a perfectly legitimate goal scored by Junior Messias. Ante Rebic was fouled as he released the ball to the Brazilian. When Messias took the shot, and just before it hit the net, Marco Serra whistled for a foul in the Rossoneri's favour, thus not giving an advantage.
The decision left everyone in shock and total surprise. Even the referee himself immediately realised his mistake and apologised to the red and black faithful. However, an apology does not mean anything, as Spezia players managed to turn things around with a counter-attack after the free-kick awarded to Milan and score a winner. A win to AC Milan turned into a historic victory to Spezia at the San Siro grounds.
Now, according to what is reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport in today's print edition, AIA (Italian Referees Association), apologised to AC Milan for the grave error committed by Marco Serra. The Rossoneri club board accepted the apology, despite the seriousness of the error that cost Stefano Pioli and his team 3 valuable points in the Scudetto race.
